Pet Surgery

We understand that when your pet needs surgery, you worry not only about the condition being treated but also about your pet’s safety. Your Animal Medical Center of Troy surgery team is committed to working with you to determine which surgical options are best for your pet while explaining the surgery thoroughly and answering all your questions.

State-of-the Art Surgical Capabilities

Our highly experienced vets perform various surgical procedures while employing the most advanced measures to ensure your pet’s safety.

Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgeries include spays and neuters, mass removal, and foreign body removal.

Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgeries include those performed to repair bone (such as fractures) and joints. We perform major orthopedic surgeries, including tibial plateau leveling Osteotomies (TPLO, for repair of ACL injuries).

Preparing for Surgery

Your vet will thoroughly explain your pet’s surgery, including any preparation required at home (such as making sure your pet doesn’t eat or drink prior to surgery) and what you can expect during your pet’s recovery. All of your questions will be answered.

Preparation for surgery also includes:

  • A recommended blood test to make certain your pet will safely tolerate anesthesia
  • Signing a consent form, which is standard practice prior to all surgeries

You may also request services such as dental cleaning, nail trimming, microchipping, and updating of vaccines while your pet is sedated.

Anesthesia

A number of factors—such as your pet’s age and health and the type of surgery being performed—are taken into consideration to create an individualized anesthesia plan that meets your pet’s specific needs.

We have state-of-the-art inhalation anesthesia combined with continuous monitoring of your pet’s vital signs throughout the entire surgical procedure are employed to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort.

Postoperative Pain Management

Depending on factors such as your pet’s health and the type of surgery performed, a certain amount of discomfort or pain may be experienced temporarily after surgery. We are committed to making your pet as comfortable as possible during and after surgery and throughout the recovery process. To this end:

  • A pain injection given upon completion of surgery provides relief for 24 hours.
  • Oral pain medication is provided for use at home.
  • When indicated, laser therapy can be used to help reduce pain and inflammation. This painless treatment also helps to speed healing.

Postoperative Care

After surgery, your pet will be monitored closely in our postoperative Intensive Care Suite until fully recovered from anesthesia. Prior to discharge, you will be given instructions for your pet’s care at home.
